Pharmacy Delivery Options

The savings and convenience of medicine by mail

Anyone who takes prescription medicine for a chronic condition knows how expensive it can be. It’s also expensive for employers and insurance companies. But with our in-house pharmacy services for CVS Caremark® Mail Service Pharmacy and network specialty pharmacy — it’s easy to manage these costs more effectively. Plus, members get the added convenience of having prescription drugs delivered right to their door.

Network Specialty Pharmacy*

Specialty medicines treat conditions like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, anemia and cancer. These drugs may be injected, infused or taken by mouth. With network specialty pharmacy, members are able to get these drugs, as well as extra support to understand how to use them correctly.

Personalized clinical support

We provide access to trained nurses and pharmacists who can help members make sure they take their medicines as directed. Services include:

  • Self-injection training
  • Side-effect management
  • Ongoing follow-up with prescribing doctors
  • Coordination of home health care, when necessary
  • Outreach calls to check on progress, address concerns and coordinate refills

CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy

Maintenance medicines are ones that people take long term. They treat conditions like asthma, diabetes and high cholesterol. With CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy, it’s quick and easy to fill prescriptions for these drugs — and to save money, too.

Negotiated rates

With Aetna negotiating prices on their behalf, members can enjoy lower costs for generic and brand-name drugs.

Larger supplies, smaller copayments

With their doctors' okay, members can get up to a 90-day supply of their maintenance medicine, or the most allowed by their plan. A 90-day supply filled by mail may cost less than three 30-day refills at a retail pharmacy.

Consistent care, lower overall costs

When medicine is sent by mail, it’s delivered right to the member’s home, office or anywhere he or she chooses. A larger supply sent by mail also makes it easier for people to keep taking their medicines as directed. This improves their health and can lead to fewer costly trips to the emergency room. And that can mean lower overall medical costs for employers.

Tracking outcomes

Members who need extra support have access to the care management nurse team. Our goal is to boost productivity, improve the health of our members and reduce the costs of expensive treatments and urgent care.

Over 12 months, this nurse team helped to lower the cost of care for members with multiple sclerosis by 29% ($93 per member, per month).1 These members also had a 47% reduction in specialist visits and a 19% reduction in MRIs.1 This meant fewer trips to the doctor for members, and lower costs for everyone.

Survey says: High satisfaction
  • 95% of members surveyed said they were completely, very or somewhat satisfied with a network specialty pharmacy.2

*Aetna Specialty Pharmacy and the Specialty Pharmacy Network may not be available to California HMO members. Doctors may have agreed to dispense and administer these drugs to members themselves. Or they may write a prescription so that members can fill them at any participating retail or mail-order pharmacy.
