Can I change from Original Medicare to an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan?
Yes. You can change from Original Medicare to an Aetna Medicare Advantage (MA) plan during certain times of the year. These are called enrollment periods.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15–December 7
During AEP, most people with Medicare can:
- Change from Original Medicare to an MA plan
- Change from an MA plan back to Original Medicare
- Change from one MA plan to another
- Join, drop or change a Medicare prescription drug plan (PDP)
Your coverage starts on January 1. -
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)
January 1–March 31
This period is only for people who already have an MA plan. During this time, you can:
- Change to a different MA plan (with or without drug coverage)
- Drop your MA plan and go back to Original Medicare
- Join a Part D drug plan, if you change back to Original Medicare
Your coverage starts the first day of the next month.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Enrollment date depends
You may be able to change plans at other times if you have a special life event:
- You move
- You get married
- You change jobs
- Loss of existing coverage
- Your current plan dropping its contract with Medicare
- Have both Medicare and Medicaid
- Have a chronic condition

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Seven months around your 65th birthday
This period is your first chance to sign up for Medicare. It starts three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after.
During this time, you can:- Enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A and Part B)
- Join an MA plan
- Join a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan

What Aetna Medicare plans cover prescriptions?
Here are the Aetna Medicare plans that can help pay for prescriptions. Be sure to look at the plan details to see if it covers the medications you take.
Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans
MAPD plans help pay for your prescription medicines. You may still have out-of-pocket costs, which means you may pay for some of it yourself. And MAPD plans usually include benefits like dental, vision and hearing.
Aetna Medicare Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs)
Some C-SNPs also include drug coverage. It depends on the plan, so you should check the plan details. These plans are made to help people who have certain long-term health problems.
Aetna Medicare prescription drug plans (PDPs)
A PDP is a stand-alone drug plan. That means you can buy it on its own. It doesn’t have to be part of a Medicare Advantage plan.
Before you pick a PDP, make sure your medicines are on the drug list for the plan. This is called a formulary.
