Prescription drug coverage rules:
Some drugs have coverage rules you need to follow. Here are a few examples:
- Prior authorization - You or your doctor must get approval from Aetna before we cover the drug.
- Quantity limits - Some drugs have a limit on how much you can fill in a certain time frame. Example: 60 tablets for a 30-day supply.
- Step therapy - You may need to try a different drug first before we cover your drug.
Need a coverage exception? Here are two ways you can ask.
You or your doctor can request an exception to one of our coverage rules.
Here’s how you can ask:
- Request an exception online.
- Call Customer Care at the number on your Aetna member ID card.

Understanding our medication transition process
Sometimes you may take a drug that is not on our formulary (drug list) or has coverage rules. A formulary is our list of covered drugs. It also shows you:
- The tier for each drug
- Any limits or rules
- If it is available by mail order
Temporary supply
If this happens, you may be able to get a one-month temporary supply.
This supply gives you time to:
- Talk with your doctor about switching to a drug we cover
- Ask for an exception so you can stay on your current drug
