What Medicare plans can help me save money if I take many medications?

Medicare plans that help pay for medications are called Part D. Even if you take just one medication, a Part D plan can help you pay less at the pharmacy.

Here are the plans that have Medicare Part D:

Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans (MAPD)

These plans help pay for things like medications, hospital stays and visits to a doctor or provider.

Prescriptions drug plans (PDP)

You can get a PDP by itself if you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B). A PDP helps pay for prescription drugs.

Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C‑SNPs)

C-SNPs are Medicare Advantage plans. They are made for people with certain conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

How do plans with Part D save me money on my prescriptions?

Part D plans have prescription drug coverage. This means you’ll pay less for your medications. Original Medicare doesn’t cover most medications.

It’s important to have prescription drug coverage, even if you don’t take any medications right now. If you sign up late or miss the enrollment deadline, you may have to pay extra money every month for your plan. This extra cost is called a late enrollment penalty.

Can I get help paying for a plan with prescription drug coverage?

There is a federal government program called Extra Help for people with a lower income. It can help you save on your prescription drug costs. And you may pay less for your plan each month. Learn more about the Extra Help program, who may qualify and how to apply.

Some Medicare Advantage plans also include an allowance to help pay for certain over-the-counter products like cold medicine. Learn more about the OTC benefit

Is there a Medicare Advantage plan that helps me manage my medications if I have many health conditions?

Many Medicare Advantage plans have a no added cost program called Medication Therapy Management (MTM). This is a program for people who take many medications or have special health needs. A nurse or pharmacist will teach you about your medications. They will also make sure you are using them safely.

I take many medications — can I get vision, dental and hearing coverage too?

Yes, some Medicare Advantage plans help with these needs. They can help pay for things like:

  • Eye exam and eyewear
  • Hearing exam and hearing aids
  • Dental checkups and cleanings

What Medicare Advantage plans are available for people with certain conditions like diabetes or heart disease?

If you have diabetes or heart disease, a C-SNP might be best for you. This is a Medicare Advantage plan that helps pay for some medications and specialist visits.

If a C-SNP doesn’t cover your health needs, an MAPD plan may be right for you. This kind of plan helps pay for your medications and doctor visits.
