Technology’s role in navigating health care

How digital tools, like the Aetna Health app*, support better health care

Technology is changing how people receive and interact with care.

Studies show that most Americans now use digital tools and apps for health-related activities, like finding convenient and efficient care that’s connected with their health plans.

Health in your hands

Meet Jane. Jane is a busy working mother who recently injured her shoulder. After a long workday at the computer, Jane finally gets around to looking for a physical therapist at night. She’s relieved to see her health plan app has dark mode to avoid further strain on her eyes and personal search preferences to help her find a female physical therapist within walking distance – exactly what she wants. This is the first time her shoulder’s given her trouble, so a copay cost preview and coverage details for other kinds of shoulder care let her know what to expect. Since the search for a PT was so simple, she still has time to check in on her family’s deductible and wellness reminders, scheduling flu vaccines for the whole family at a nearby MinuteClinic®, right from the app.

Jane’s health plan app helps her fit care in with her life – not the other way around.

Making health care easier for all with digital solutions

Digital tools make health care more understandable and efficient. With access to plan details at any time on mobile apps, it's never been easier to check the status of a prior authorization, see how much your plan paid for a claim, or track your deductible spending. Having this information on hand in real time brings people closer to their own health care and leads to better overall health outcomes.

A closer look at the Aetna Health app

As of December 2025, almost half of active users are on the Aetna Health app each month. The Aetna Health app helps members manage their health care, all in one place. The app brings lots of information to members’ fingertips, from digital ID cards to claims information.

A refreshed version was released in summer 2025, setting the stage for continued enhancements that engage members throughout their unique health journeys. Recent updates include:

  • Conversational AI navigation: Generative AI content embedded through the app synthesizes and simplifies key details with visually dynamic info that’s personalized for each member. This experience launched to a beta population in October and will expand to a broader audience over the first half of 2026.
  • Integrated scheduling: Convenient, in-app access allows members to schedule vaccines at their local CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic within minutes.
  • Claims charts: A new “donut” chart breaks down costs for members in a more visual way, showing how they share the cost of care with their plan based on their current plan spending.
  • Live chat: AI-powered chat offers 24/7 support and seamlessly connects members with Aetna agents when the human touch is needed.
  • Provider search: A new Smart Compare tool gives personalized provider recommendations based on member preferences and health needs, boosting confidence by showing when providers accept new patients.
  • Improved accessibility and inclusivity: Dark mode demonstrates a market-leading strategy around accessibility, providing a more comfortable viewing experience for those who prefer a darker screen. Aetna is the only major payer that delivers on all nine of Apple’s App Store Accessibility Nutrition Label program, a critical benchmark for supporting members of all abilities and needs.

Digital solutions are a growing part of health care. Focused on furthering, not replacing, the expertise of trained health care professionals, Aetna will continue to innovate digital solutions that make health plans simpler and easier to access, bringing members just like Jane closer to their own health care and paving the way for Aetna’s mission to make healthier happen together.
