Protection from the flu

The seasonal flu vaccine is available to Aetna members who have benefits that cover preventive services. The vaccine comes in two forms:

  • Flu shot: For those 6 months and older.
  • Nasal flu spray: We cover the spray approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The spray is for non-pregnant, healthy people ages 2 to 49.

Adults need only one dose. Children under 9 who have never had the flu vaccine should have two doses at least four weeks apart.

Who should get a flu vaccine?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months and older get the flu vaccine. It is very important for people at higher risk to get the flu vaccine. This includes health care workers and caregivers of children younger than 6 months.

What should I do if I have flu symptoms?

Stay home and avoid contact with other people. (Except to get medical care, of course.) Flu symptoms include fever, muscle aches, chills, cough, sore throat, fatigue and headache.

When should I call my doctor about my flu?

Call a doctor if you have severe illness or are at high risk for flu complications due to any of these conditions:

  • Asthma or other lung problems
  • Diabetes
  • Weakened immune system
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease (except high blood pressure)
  • Liver disorder
  • Neurologic and neuromuscular disorders
  • Pregnancy

Remember: Young children are at greater risk for complications from the flu. If you can’t get to your doctor or don’t have one, find an urgent care center.
