What vaccines are covered by Medicare?

Vaccines are important for your health and the health of others. The good news is there are vaccines covered by Medicare. Medicare Part B, as part of Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, and prescription drug plans (Part D) both cover some of the most common vaccines.

What vaccines are covered by Medicare Part B?

There are four vaccines covered by preventive care benefits under Medicare Part B:

  • COVID-19
  • Hepatitis B
  • Pneumonia
  • Flu

Age, risk level and other factors may affect whether someone is eligible for these vaccines.

What vaccines are covered by Medicare Part D?

Prescription drug plans under Medicare Part D include more options for vaccine coverage. Preventive vaccines are usually available with Medicare Part D, including:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Shingles vaccine
  • RSV vaccine
  • HPV
  • Mpox
  • MMR
  • Tetanus
  • Diphtheria

Other vaccinations for travel may also be covered.

How much do vaccines cost with Medicare?

Vaccines may affect your Medicare cost planning. If your provider accepts Medicare, Part B coverage will pay the full cost of your covered vaccine. If you have Part D, costs may vary. Some vaccines are available at no cost with Part D, while others require you to pay. Costs may also change depending on the pharmacy or doctor’s office you get vaccinated at.

Where to get vaccinated

Once you know your coverage, you need to know where to get vaccinated. Most pharmacies offer vaccinations, as well as some grocery stores and other large national retailers. Costs may change at different kinds of vaccination locations. Choosing a network pharmacy will help ensure you pay less. For more information on costs, ask your provider.
