New Jersey Health Plan Choices (2017)

Special Enrollment Period

Aetna (ALIC and AHI) is withdrawing from the Individual health insurance market in New Jersey at the end of 2017. We will not offer Individual plans in 2018. In accordance with New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance rules, there can be no effective dates after July 1, 2017 for new policies.

  • A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for new Individual health plans with an effective date no later than July 1, 2017 will be honored. This includes SEPs for new policies resulting from birth/adoption/foster that occur no later than July 1, 2017.

  • Adding a dependent to an existing Individual health plan does NOT involve an SEP. Dependents may be added in the normal course through the remainder of 2017.

    • A dependent added to an existing policy based on a marriage in December 2017 would NOT be eligible. The last 2017 marriage date we’ll accept for a December 1, 2017 effective date would be November 30, 2017, provided the enrollment was submitted on November 30, 2017.

    • A child added to an existing policy based on a birth/adoption/foster date up until December 31, 2017 will be accepted effective on the date of birth/adoption/foster, as long as the application is submitted within 60 days of the birth/adoption/foster.
  • Individuals wanting either new SEP Individual health plans or to add dependents to existing policies to our Inside Sales Representatives (ISRs) at 1-800-217-2386.
