Who can join a Medicare Advantage plan?
To join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must:
- Be enrolled in Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B)
- Live in an Aetna plan service area.
Additional eligibility requirements may exist. Call to speak to a licensed agent.
You can enroll in a Medicare plan during one of the following four enrollment periods:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which begins when you’re first eligible for Medicare
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which occurs from October 15 through December 7
- Open Enrollment Period (OEP), from January 1 through March 31
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP), during specific personal circumstances
Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period begins October 15 and ends December 7 of each year. The choices you make generally take effect January 1 of the following year.
During AEP, you can:
- Switch Medicare plans
- Join a new Medicare plan
- Cancel your Medicare plan
When you enter an enrollment period, there are a few steps you can take to enroll.
You can choose one of the following Medicare enrollment options:
- Enroll on AetnaMedicare.com
- Enroll using the plan’s paper enrollment form
