Leave or cancel my stand-alone prescription drug plan (PDP)

If you want to change or cancel your Medicare Part D plan, it’s good to know the steps. Here’s how and when you can do it.

Can I leave my PDP?

Yes, you can ask to leave your Medicare Part D drug plan. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) must approve your request. When you leave, your plan will stop covering your prescription drugs.

Do I have to disenroll from my current Part D plan to join a new one?

No. You can switch to a new Medicare drug plan by joining another prescription drug plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) or a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you qualify. You don’t need to cancel your old Medicare drug plan. Your old plan will end when your new one starts.

What if I want to leave my current Medicare Part D plan and not join another one?

If you leave your Medicare drug plan and wait too long to join another prescription drug plan (63 days or more), you might have to pay a Part D late enrollment penalty. To learn more, call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users call 1-877-486-2048, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I disenroll from my Part D plan?

Here are four ways to leave your Medicare drug plan:

1. Join another Medicare plan while you’re still enrolled in a stand-alone drug plan

If you join another drug plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage (MAPD), you’ll be taken out of your current plan. You can do this during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 through December 7 each year) or during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) allowed by Medicare.

2. Send a letter or form by mail or fax

You can send us a letter with your plan information. Or you can download and fill out your plan’s form:

Complete, sign and mail or fax the form to:

SilverScript® Insurance Company
P.O. Box 30007
Pittsburgh, PA 15222-0330
Fax: 1-866-552-6205

3. Call Aetna® Member Services

Call the Member Services number on your Aetna member ID card. You can call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to tell us you want to leave. We’ll send you a form to fill out. Once we get your completed form, we’ll send you a letter with the date your coverage ends.

4. Call Medicare directly

You can call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTY users call 1-877-486-2048. An agent will work with you to help you leave your plan.

While you’re waiting for your enrollment to end, you’re still a member of our plan. To use your prescription drug benefits, you’ll still need to go to one of our network pharmacies and follow the plan rules until you’re officially out.

Note: If you don’t get a letter from us with your disenrollment date, call the Member Services number on your Aetna member ID card. An agent can tell you the date your coverage will end.

Medicare enrollment reminder

If you join a Medicare Advantage plan that offers health care and drug coverage, you have to get your drug coverage through that plan. If you then decide to enroll in a stand-alone prescription drug plan, you will be taken out of your Medicare Advantage plan and returned to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Your stand-alone drug plan will still be valid.

What if I get Extra Help from Medicare?

If you get Extra Help from Medicare, you can leave your Medicare Part D drug plan and join another one once every three months during the first nine months of the year.

Can I be removed from my plan without my consent?

There are times you may be removed from a plan. These reasons are not related to your health. Here’s why you might be removed:

  • You do not stay enrolled in Medicare Part A or B (or both).
  • You move out of the service area or are away from the plan’s service area for more than 12 months. Note: If you plan to move or take a long trip, call Member Services to check if the new place is in your plan’s service area.
  • You give false or hide important information about other drug coverage you have.
  • You act in a way that makes it hard for us to take care of you and other members. We can only do this if Medicare allows it.
  • You don’t pay your monthly plan fees (premiums). You might get a letter telling you that you have a grace period to pay before your membership ends.
  • Medicare ends its contract with us, or we end our contract with Medicare, or we no longer offer drug coverage.

If you are taken out of the plan, you can ask us to reconsider. Call Member Services at 1-866-235-5660, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTY users call 711.
