This CPB is revised to state that Aetna considers bullectomy medically necessary for the treatment of dyspneic members with giant bulbous emphysema when they have a single large bulla producing significant respiratory compromise. This policy is based upon guidelines from the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (GOLD), the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI), and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).
