Find information on clinical quality

Depending on your search area, Aetna can help you quickly and easily locate effective, high performing specialists in the Aetna network of health care providers. Aetna gives a special designation, called Aexcel®, to doctors and doctor groups who:

  • Are part of the Aetna network of health care providers
  • Have met industry-accepted practices for clinical performance
  • Have met Aetna’s efficiency standards

How to locate an Aexcel-designated specialist

Aetna provides its members with access to an online provider directory, DocFind®: To access DocFind, log on to Aetna Navigator, our secure member website. To locate Aexcel-designated physicians within DocFind, look for the blue star Blue star next to their names.

How Aetna identifies high-performing specialists

When evaluating specialists for the Aexcel designation, Aetna looks at:

  • 30-day hospital readmission rates for patients
  • Patients' rates of health complications during hospital stays
  • Other treatments, by specialty, that can help improve health outcomes

Specialists who meet criteria in these areas are then evaluated on cost efficiency. We try to include all costs of their care – not just office visits. We review inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, lab and pharmacy claims. Then we compare the total costs of care from each doctor to the costs of other doctors in the same region.

Doctors who best meet these qualifications are designated for Aexcel.1 Be aware that Aexcel is only available in certain regions.
