Guidance for HIPAA October 16, 2003 Compliance Deadline

The upcoming October 16, 2003 HIPAA compliance date has created some concern within the health care community regarding electronic transactions. We would like you to understand what Aetna has done to prepare for a smooth transition to HIPAA compliance.

Aetna is positioned to support HIPAA-compliant electronic transactions on the October 16 compliance date. Please be aware that we have the flexibility to continue to accept non-HIPAA compliant electronic claims on and after that date, and that we have established procedures for working with submitters to assist them in achieving HIPAA compliance as soon as possible. This approach is consistent with guidance provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

We strongly encourage the continuation of electronic claim filing as it results in cleaner claims, more accurate and timely claim payments, reduced administration for physician practices, and the need for fewer phone calls. We have accepted the HIPAA-compliant claim format since October 2002. Since that time, we have processed more than 60 million claims and expect this smooth flow to continue uninterrupted.

We look forward to working collaboratively with you to help facilitate compliance. For more information, please see the Guidance for HIPAA Compliance Deadline Q&A and Electronic Connectivity.
