Approval for care 
Individual outpatient therapy visits do not require precertification or authorization.

We will review available patient information to see if the treatment raises concerns. In some cases one of our care managers may discuss treatment options with the treating clinician.

Determination of medical necessity
Behavioral health professionals who work with Aetna use:

  • Our proprietary Level of Care Assessment Tool (LOCAT) to help determine the appropriate level of care
  • American Society for Addiction Medicine Patient Placement Criteria, a nationally recognized guideline for treatment of chemical dependency

In Texas, we use the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse regulations.
