Aetna Awards $20,000 Grant to the National Cancer Coalition

Funding will help improve the health and wellness of communities in the Dominican Republic, Ghana and the Philippines

HARTFORD, Conn., February 01, 2010 — Aetna (NYSE: AET) recently awarded a $20,000 grant to the National Cancer Coalition (NCC), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce the suffering of cancer patients and their families by providing medical and financial relief, research, and educational programs throughout the world in an effort to improve patients’ quality of life.

The grant will support the NCC Cares program, which supplies hospitals and clinics in impoverished areas of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America with the tools and resources needed to assist medical professionals and facilities in the treatment and prevention of cancer and other serious diseases. The program provides chemotherapies, chronic and essential medicines, laboratory and diagnostic equipment, and much needed medical supplies to benefit underserved patients in some of the poorest areas in the world.

“The donation to NCC compliments Aetna’s position on being proactive about preventing, educating and treating illnesses, such as cancer,” says Tim Blevins, Head of Medical and Network Operations for Aetna Global Benefits. “It also highlights our company’s commitment to international health and wellness issues.”

Aetna Global Benefits (AGB), the international business segment of Aetna, recently implemented Phase III of its Aetna Global Health Connections program, of which cancer education and support is a new component of its International Disease Management Program.

Robert B. Landry, President of NCC, stated, “National Cancer Coalition is honored to receive this support for our humanitarian programs from Aetna. The NCC Cares program is the world’s largest cancer-focused medical relief program and this award from Aetna will allow us to provide assistance to countless additional patients with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.”
