Aetna Awarded $81,000 to San Antonio Nonprofits in 2008

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, February 05, 2009 — Aetna (NYSE: AET) and the Aetna Foundation in 2008 awarded seven community grants and sponsorships in San Antonio totaling $81,000, with a particular focus on improving the lives of the underserved. The contributions support Aetna's commitment to enhancing the quality of health care, and reducing racial and ethnic disparities. In total, Aetna and the Aetna Foundation contributed more than $25 million nationally in 2008. The seven grant recipients were:
"Aetna is proud to support organizations in San Antonio which are making great strides in targeting health care issues that affect our communities," said Joe Braley, market head for Aetna in Texas. "As a responsible corporate citizen, we recognize our obligation to help address these critical needs." The Aetna Foundation awarded $25,000 to the San Antonio Food Bank for its Nutrition Education and Outreach Program that educates low-income individuals in the nutritional value of food and physical activities, making recommendations to improve health through age-appropriate activities. Alamo Public Telecommunications Council received $20,000 for its Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer conference, which was presented in both English and Spanish and addressed specific health concerns of Latina women and their families. Community Outreach Opportunities on Diabetes, a program from the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, received a $15,000 grant to host health fairs and workshops where doctors that specialize in diabetes interact with members of the community. Under a $6,000 grant, the American Cancer Society's San Antonio School Health Leadership Initiative (SALI) has a five-year initiative designed to provide in-depth preparation to local school district staff and community leaders in coordination of schools health programs. Aetna awarded a $5,000 grant to the Juvenile Outreach and Vocational Education Network (JOVEN) for the Creando La Vision program which provides programs and activities to children that will eventually lead them to high school graduation or employment. The King William Association was awarded a $5,000 grant for the King William Fair, which is a family-oriented event that shares Texas history with the community. Under a $5,000 grant, Texas Public Radio's AccessAbility Fest 2008 was able to spotlight programs and services provided by nonprofit institutions supporting individuals with physical, developmental, mental, sensory and general disabilities.
