Memel most recently was the chief medical officer and head of Medical Affairs, Professional Diagnostics for Roche Diagnostics, based in Rotkreuz, Switzerland. He also served as a member of Roche's Professional Diagnostics Global Executive Team. Prior to joining Roche, Memel was the corporate vice president of information management at PeaceHealth, a multi-state nonprofit integrated delivery system in the Pacific Northwest.

Memel will oversee Aetna's analytics, quality management and medical cost management teams. His responsibilities include tracking medical costs, evaluating cost and quality solutions for Aetna customers and infusing additional health care quality measures into the company's health care management programs.
Memel received his medical degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He holds a master of science degree in medical informatics from the University of Utah School of Medicine and a master of business administration degree from Cornell University and Queen's University Joint Program. He also did additional training in clinical effectiveness research at the Harvard School of Public Health.
