Edward J. Ludwig to Join Aetna Board

HARTFORD, Conn., June 27, 2003 — Aetna (NYSE: ΑET) announced today that Edward J. Ludwig, chairman, president and CEO of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), has been appointed to the company’s Board of Directors, effective July 1. With the addition of Ludwig, 52, Aetna’s board expands to 14 members. He will also be a member of the company’s Audit Committee.

BD is a global medical technology company headquartered in Franklin Lakes, N.J., which serves health care institutions, life science researchers, clinical laboratories, industry and the general public. Ludwig has been with the company since 1979, and chairman, president and CEO since February 2002.

Since joining BD in 1979, Ludwig has served in positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of financial management, strategic planning and operations. His previous roles have included president, Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems Division; vice president, Planning and Development; senior vice president and chief financial officer. Named president in May 1999 and CEO in January 2000, Ludwig was elected chairman in February 2002.

Active in philanthropic efforts, Ludwig serves as a Johns Hopkins University trustee and chairs the advisory board for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Additionally, he serves on the board of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. In the policy arena, Ludwig serves on the board of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), the world’s largest medical technology association, and chairs its International Committee. He is vice chair of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ) and is a member of the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC). Ludwig graduated from The College of the Holy Cross with a B.A. in economics and accounting and received his M.B.A. in finance from Columbia University.
