Aetna Appoints National Medical Director for Women's Health

HARTFORD, Conn., March 7, 2003 — Aetna (NYSE: ΑET) today announced that Cheryl Pegus, MD, MPH has been appointed National Medical Director for Women’s Health, reporting to Michael Reardon, MD, Head of Member Advantage Programs.

"A cardiologist by training, Dr. Pegus brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to women’s health issues, as well as disease management program development, clinical care for underserved populations, and clinical care of geriatric populations both in outpatient and long-term care settings," Dr. Reardon said. "Under her leadership we expect a significant expansion in the scope of our work on Women’s Health issues."

Dr. Pegus will be based in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and will be responsible for the entire spectrum of Women’s Health programs currently offered by Aetna, as well as exploring new opportunities to address the number one health risk women face: heart disease.

Dr. Pegus received her Master’s in Public Health from Columbia University School of Public Health, and her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. She was a Fellow in Cardiology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, following her internship and residency in internal medicine at New York Hospital -Cornell Medical Center.

Prior to joining Aetna, Dr. Pegus was Vice President, Product Development and Scientific Alliances at LipoScience a biotech company in Raleigh, North Carolina. Between 1996 and 2001, she was Medical Director, Cardiovascular Risk Factors Group at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in New York. While at Pfizer, she developed a number of programs focused on women’s health, including programs designed to address minority women’s health issues.
