What Can I Combine With The New Prescription Drug Coverage?
| If you have . . . |
You can … |
| Traditional Medicare only (Part A and/or Part B) |
- Enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan that covers only medications; or
- Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that covers doctor visits, hospital stays and the Medicare prescription drug coverage (MA-PD). These are HMOs and PPOs and may not be available everywhere. Medicare Advantage plans provide all your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits.
|
| Traditional Medicare plus a Medicare Supplement policy (for plans H, I, or J, with drugs) |
- Keep your supplemental drug coverage and enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan (if your Medicare supplement plan has prescription drug coverage, you must contact your supplement issuer if you choose to join a Part D plan). Your Medigap prescription drug coverage can be removed from your policy.
- If you stay in a Medicare supplement plan, continue to receive your prescription drug coverage through that plan, and later decide to join a Part D plan, you may have to pay a penalty.
|
| Medicare Advantage plan |
- Look at the notice from your plan to find out about Medicare prescription drug coverage availability. During certain times of the year you can change plans if the coverage does not meet your needs.
Note: If your Medicare Advantage plan does not have drug coverage, you will not be able to enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan and keep your Medicare Advantage plan. (Unless your Medicare Advantage Plan is a Private Fee-For-Service plan that does not offer Medicare prescription drug coverage). If you would like to have a Medicare Advantage plan and add Medicare prescription drug coverage, you will have to join a Medicare Advantage plan with Medicare prescription drug coverage (MA-PD).
|
| A plan through an employer |
- Talk to your Benefits Administrator to learn how joining an Aetna Medicare Rx plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage would affect your retiree coverage. In some cases, if you join a Medicare prescription drug plan, you could lose your retiree health coverage, as well as your prescription drug coverage.
- Read the information your employer (or the plan that administers your retiree drug coverage) sends you about how your retiree health or drug coverage will be affected if you join a Medicare plan. This information will also tell you how your retiree drug coverage compares to the Medicare prescription drug coverage.
(If your retiree drug coverage will stay the same, and the coverage is as good as Medicare prescription coverage, you can stay with your current coverage now, and you won't have to pay a penalty if you later decide to switch to Medicare prescription drug coverage. However, if you qualify for extra help to pay for Medicare prescription drug coverage, it is possible that you could get better coverage if you join a Medicare prescription drug plan.)
|
TRICARE, the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA), or the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHB) coverage
|
- As long as you still qualify for TRICARE, VA, or FEHB, you can continue to receive your prescription drug coverage through these sources. They are considered "creditable coverage."
|
| Medicaid |
- Sign up for a Medicare prescription drug plan if you have not already been assigned to one.
- If you have further questions about your Medicaid coverage, Medicare prescription drug coverage, or any other questions about "extra help," you can utilize the following resources:
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY/TDD users should call 1-877-486-2048, 24 hours a day/7days a week;
