Medicare Advantage: Eligibility
Medicare Advantage Choices | Available Plans | Prescription Coverage | What Sets Aetna Apart? | Eligibility | Enrollment | Grievance

Am I Eligible?

Just like the Original Medicare Plan (Parts A and B), you must meet certain federal requirements to qualify for an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan, whether it's with Medicare prescription drug coverage, or without.

  1. You must be entitled to Medicare Part A and enrolled in Medicare Part B, and continue to pay your Part B premium.
  2. You must live an Aetna Medicare Plan service area.

If you have permanent kidney failure, you are not eligible unless you are currently a member of an Aetna commercial HMO plan or have had a kidney transplant within the past 36 months.

When you can join
Generally, you can only make plan selections or changes to your current Medicare coverage during certain times of the year.

  • November 15 through December 31 — The period when anyone with Medicare can select a new Medicare health and/or prescription drug plan for 2008. This is also the time that anyone with Medicare can make changes to their current coverage.

  • January 1 through March 31 — The timeframe when anyone with Medicare has an additional, yet more limited, ability to make another choice if desired.

Examples of the limited changes you can make between January 1 and March 31
If you’re enrolled in: You can only join:
A Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage (MA-PD plan) a) Another Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage, or
b) Original Medicare Plan and a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan
Original Medicare Plan with a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan a) A Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage
A Medicare Advantage plan (MA plan with no prescription drug coverage) a) Another Medicare Advantage plan (with no prescription drug coverage)

Other than the enrollment periods above, to make changes during the year, you need to meet certain special exceptions, such as if you move out of your plan's service area or newly become eligible for Medicare.
