Facts About 'Bird Flu'

As the national media continue to spotlight the potential for an avian (bird) flu epidemic or pandemic overseas and in the United States, our plan sponsors and members are becoming increasingly concerned.

To make it easier for you to sort through and understand all the information, we have compiled a list of questions and answers in simple, direct language. We hope you will find it helpful in understanding more about Bird Flu.

The first section describes what Bird Flu is, the second section provides tips on how to prevent Bird Flu, and the third section provides simple reminders on avoiding respiratory illness in general.

Much of the information comes from the Centers for Disease Control. Other sources include the World Health Organization, the New England Journal of Medicine, and reports in the Wall Street Journal. It is extremely important to note that this information is subject to change based on clinical and other scientific information that may result from research into avian flu, and on any government recommendations or requirements that may be made.

To stay current on the topic, you should check the CDC and WHO web sites regularly for updated information and guidance:

With regard to Aetna's clinical policies, our policies will follow government recommendations. If the CDC or other federal agency makes recommendations on vaccinations or treatments for avian flu, we will adapt our coverage policies accordingly.
