Accidental Death & Personal Loss Coverage

Accidental Death & Personal Loss coverage (AD&PL) provides a cash payment to individuals
who suffer a qualifying bodily injury during an accident. The amount of this payment is
determined by a combination of factors, including your coverage amount and the type of injury suffered.

Qualifying for benefits

Not all injuries caused by an accident will qualify you to receive benefit payments. The exact types of injury that qualify will be specified by your plan, but may typically include death, paralysis, loss of speech or hearing, loss of sight, third degree burns, or loss of limbs. To find out more about your benefits, please review the Certificate of Coverage or contact your benefits administrator.

Not all benefit plans are available to all members. If you do not know which benefits are available through your Aetna life insurance plan, and for a complete list of exclusions and limitations, please contact your benefit administrator.

Child Care Benefit

This benefit is paid to help defray costs associated with obtaining child care in a state-licensed child care center in the event of a covered parent's death.

Educational Benefit

This benefit is paid to help make sure that a dependent child's opportunity for higher education is not cut short due to the loss of the insured employee's income. For spouses, this benefit helps provide an opportunity for valuable employment training for the purpose of obtaining or supplementing an independent income source.

Passenger Restraint and Airbag Benefit

In the event that a covered person is properly using a passengers restraint device or if an airbag is activated and neither contributes to saving the covered person's life, this benefit will supplement the accidental death benefit.

Repatriation of Remains Benefit

In the event that a covered person dies while 200 or more miles from home, this benefit provides financial assistance for preparation and return of the deceased's body to a mortuary.

Coma Benefit

A percentage of your benefit may be paid monthly for a predetermined number of months, if following an accident, you remain in a coma for more than 30 days.

Additional Benefits

Your AD&PL plan may also provide benefits for the following losses: paralysis, severance, death, speech, hearing, loss of life due to exposure, presumed loss of life due to disappearance, and disability (related to covered accident).
