In June 2004, the Aetna Foundation launched the Quality of Care Grants Program to support philanthropic initiatives that addressed disparities in health as well as end-of-life care issues, with priority consideration for initiatives that addressed both areas.

• Through the program's inaugural cycle, in April 2005 $2.25 million was awarded to 14 nonprofits across the country that addressed these two critical health-related priorities.



• The program's 2005/06 cycle continued to concentrate on care at the end of life, and added depression as a focus. In April 2006, $2.25 million was awarded to 10 nonprofit organizations, many of the grants focused on ensuring quality care for racially and ethnically diverse populations.

Since the program's launch, Aetna and the Aetna Foundation have granted more than $2.8 million to groups that are improving end-of-life and palliative care, and $1.4 million to organizations helping to improve how we diagnose and treat depression.
