Making Education a Priority for Connecticut Schoolchildren Making Hartford a Science & Education Destination The Aetna Foundation has committed $1.5 million to the Connecticut Science Center, a spectacular new regional tourist attraction. Our leadership and funding in the early stages helped to formalize plans and galvanize support for the center, while our continuing commitment will support the Aetna Gallery, The Picture of Health. Revitalizing Urban Schools The Aetna Foundation granted $1 million to Trinity College to establish the Aetna Center for Families (ACF). As part of The Learning Corridor, a campus of four magnet schools, a performing arts center and community programs - ACF has helped families learn English as a second language and prepare for the workforce for over a decade. Enriching Academic Opportunities Through its Summer Academic Enrichment Grants program, now in its 35th year, the Aetna Foundation provides academic and cultural enrichment opportunities to thousands of at-risk, Hartford-area students. Grants have been made to such organizations as Boys & Girls Club of Hartford, Center City Churches, ConnectiKids, Dance CT, Organized Parents Make a Difference, and many others. In Hartford, a $250,000 Aetna Foundation investment is supporting a local education fund (LEF) designed to improve student retention and achievement. Under the guidance of the Metro Hartford Alliance, local community and corporate stakeholders are working in partnership with the public school system, to make lasting improvements and accelerate school reform. |
