Voice of Conscience Award Winners
2006
Employee Winner Judith Lackey, Senior Project manager Middletown, CT Judith Lackey, Senior Project Manager, was selected as winner of the 2006 Voice of Conscience Employee Award. Inspired by her mother's battle with breast cancer, Judith has walked hundreds of miles, raised thousands of dollars, and sewn countless CUREchiefs, which serve as headwear for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Her infectious enthusiasm has inspired dozens of colleagues, friends, and family members to walk, solicit, and sew to raise money for cancer research. She is the compassionate engine behind an impressive array of charitable accomplishments. In 2002, she spearheaded the production and sale of a cookbook called “Tribute to Heroes,” which benefited victims of the 9/11 tragedy. As Chair of the Middletown Aetna Volunteer Council, the entity charged with organizing workplace volunteering, she increased membership from about 50 employees to more than 160. She organized a Hurricane Katrina-drive that collected over 1,200 items in three days. In addition, she manages more than four major volunteer events per year and regularly lends a hand to Meals on Wheels and other local charities. 2005 National Winner Rosalynn Carter Former First Lady of the United States Atlanta, GA Rosalynn Carter has been an advocate for mental health, early childhood immunization, human rights and conflict resolution through her work at The Carter Center, which she founded with her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, in 1982. She has had a lifelong dedication to issues affecting women and children. In 1991, she and Mrs. Betty Bumpers, wife of former U.S. Sen. Dale Bumpers, launched "Every Child by Two," a campaign to publicize the need for early childhood immunizations. She has focused much-needed attention on the plight of people suffering from mental illnesses and helped reduce the stigma that prevents many people from receiving proper care. Mrs. Carter was an active honorary chair of the President's Commission on Mental Health, which resulted in passage of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980.
