Leaders of the Century 2000 African American History Calendar
In 2000, at the close of the century, Aetna took the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans throughout 100 years of extraordinary events. Because selecting 12 Leaders of the Century was a major undertaking, Aetna sought counsel from a panel of respected and distinguished historians to nominate individuals. Members of the community were then given the chance to cast their vote for their choice. More than 27,000 people from across the nation cast ballots. Leaders of the Century selected included Booker T. Washington, Sarah "Madam C.J." Walker, Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, Howard Thurman, Langston Hughes, Charles Richard Drew, M.D., Thurgood Marshall, Jacob Lawrence, Jackie Robinson, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Oprah Gail Winfrey.
