The Gift of Giving Back
African Americans and the Spirit of Philanthropy
1999 African American History Calendar

Philanthropy -- the giving of time, money and goods -- has a long rooted tradition in African American communities, where neighbors collectively helped neighbors. Aetna's 1999 calendar profiled some of the nation's most generous individuals. These philanthropists have graciously supported education, medical care for the disadvantaged, disease prevention, cultural enrichment for children, and inner city redevelopment, among others. Through their commitment, they encourage African American progress and contribute directly to the greater well-being of society.
