Aetna offers a network of pharmacies to fill specialty medicines. A specialty pharmacy will understand that these medicines typically carry a risk for side effects. They are also often expensive. You may find that these challenges make it difficult to stay on track with your prescribed therapy schedule. For these reasons, it is best that you receive ongoing support from trained nurses and pharmacists while you take these medicines. A specialty pharmacy can provide you with this type of extra support. Specialty medicines may have special shipping and handling needs. For example, they may need to stay at a cool temperature. Or they may need to be delivered within 24 hours. A specialty pharmacy will meet these requirements. Aetna Specialty Pharmacy - one stop for all of your specialty medicine needs. When Aetna Specialty Pharmacy receives your prescription for a specialty medicine, they will work with you to meet your specific needs:
* Please note that there are select "limited access" specialty medicines that can only be filled through a designated pharmacy. The following are limited access specialty medicines. Neither Aetna Specialty Pharmacy nor retail pharmacies have access to dispense these. If you need one of these drugs, ask your doctor to send your prescription to the appropriate specialty pharmacy noted here:
If Aetna Specialty Pharmacy receives a prescription for one of these select specialty medicines, they will respond right away. They will immediately forward the prescription to a specialty pharmacy that is authorized to fill your prescription for you. You do not need to do anything.
