U. Diane Buckingham, M.D. - Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Overland Park, KansasMental Health
Photo of U. Diane Buckingham, M.D.'The stigma of mental illness is stronger in African American communities. But people have taken positive steps toward mental health. They have the ability to open their eyes and view the world in a different way, to view mental health as a brain disorder as opposed to a 'crazy' disorder.'
For U. Diane Buckingham, M.D., a private practice child and adolescent psychiatrist in Overland Park, Kansas, addressing the oft-hidden mental health needs of black Americans is not merely a career. The multitalented psychiatrist uses any and all platforms to advance her vision of quality mental health care for all. She educates and advocates from the boardrooms of a wide variety of mental health societies and human services organizations, as well as from the halls of academic medicine and the front lines of mental health delivery. She's even educated listeners as a frequent health commentator on Kansas City's KPRT Radio.

Dr. Buckingham earned a nursing degree before graduating from the University of Kansas medical school in 1989. She has earned many top awards, from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; the Ernest Y. Williams, M.D., Clinical Scholars of Distinction Award; and the Outstanding Psychiatric Resident Award from the Black Psychiatrists of America.
