We help patients to navigate the health care system; and we show them the benefits of medicines and of improving their environment, for example, avoiding tobacco smoke. But we still face challenges in access to health care for all.'
Floyd J. Malveaux, M.D., Ph.D., is the executive director of Merck Childhood Asthma Network, Inc., in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was vice provost for Health Affairs and dean of the College of Medicine at Howard University, where he received his medical degree in 1974. Dr. Malveaux also holds doctorates in microbiology and in public health. He trained and later taught at prestigious venues such as Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Malveaux is a nationally recognized expert on asthma and allergic diseases, who has published widely and manages a very successful asthma research program. It investigates problems such as the identification of genetic and environmental risk factors associated with asthma in minority populations.

"We're making small strides in areas where we have started developing specific interventions and identifying risk factors, especially environmental risk factors," he says. His research receives $1 million annually from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Aetna Foundation. Dr. Malveaux's wide range of community service includes leadership roles in important groups such as the American Lung Association and the NAACP.
