Male Narrator: Sometimes, pro-bono legal help is all that’s needed to help a family or a non-profit organization. One Aetna lawyer is using his legal skills to help preserve a unique style of music, known as “Bentonia Blues.”

Brad Terry, Aetna In-house Counsel: There is a need in Bentonia to establish some type of Blues society to preserve for future generations this very unique and rare style of Blues.

The Aetna Foundation has contributed more than $310 million to improve health and the quality of life for all citizens. Addressing racial and ethnic disparities in health care is a special focus. In addition to funding more than $15.5 million dollars worth of programs aimed at closing the health care gap, Aetna led the way by being the first insurer to voluntarily collect race and ethnicity data from members. It’s information that’s helped Aetna create targeted programs to meet the needs of diverse populations.

Male Narrator: Aetna has used its leadership in the industry to help shape public policy for the public good – whether it’s lobbying for parity in mental health benefits or proposing national guidelines on genetic testing. But the company understands that its commitment to diversity and social justice must begin within its own walls.

It starts at the top with a board of directors that is diverse not only in experience but in cultural background and gender, and continues with a workforce as diverse as the population it serves – an atmosphere of tolerance, inclusion and engagement, where everyone’s contributions are valued and respected. Aetna extends this commitment to diversity to the public with its African-American History Calendar.

For 26 years, the calendar has profiled the achievements of African-American leaders, including tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr. Arthur was a member of the Aetna board of directors and was chair of the Aetna Foundation at the time of his passing in 1993. The Aetna Voice of Conscience Award is an annual tribute to Arthur’s humanitarianism and Aetna’s long-held values. And the company’s commitment to these values has not gone unrecognized.
