eligibility requirements
Here you will find guidelines and eligibility requirements for applying for Hartford and Middletown grants, Regional Community Grants and the Healthy Community Outreach Program.
Aetna Foundation grant programs that support a wide range of initiatives in Hartford and Middletown. Grant and sponsorship opportunities are available in health, academic and cultural enrichment, arts, neighborhoods and summer programs.
We accept applications from nonprofit organizations with evidence of IRS 501(c)(3) designation or de facto tax-exempt status.
- While organizations may apply for grants in more than one program, the Aetna Foundation will fund only one grant per organization in a calendar year, with few exceptions.
- Proposals are accepted only through the Aetna Foundation's online system.
- Apply early to avoid last-minute submission problems. We are unable to grant extensions to deadlines for any reason.
- We do not respond to inquiries about a proposal's status during the review period.
- If your proposal is declined, we will notify you via e-mail according to the schedule above.
- The Aetna Foundation does not provide individual feedback on applications.
- Proposals will be evaluated based on criteria met and potential for impact.
- The number of grants and total dollars awarded will depend upon the quantity and quality of applications received, availability of resources, and criteria outlined in this text.
- We do not always award grants at the full amount requested.
- Submission of an application is not a guarantee of funding.
- Organizations receiving funding in the current calendar year for a multiyear grant are not eligible.
- While organizations may apply for more than one program, the Aetna Foundation will approve only one grant per organization in a calendar year, with few exceptions. Therefore, please carefully review other program categories and deadlines before you apply for a grant.
Regional Community Grant Programs focus on philanthropic initiatives in obesity and health literacy with a special emphasis on improving racial and ethnic health care equality. Only programs serving targeted counties are eligible to apply. A list of targeted counties is located on the Apply for an Aetna Foundation Grant page.
We accept grant applications from nonprofit organizations with evidence of IRS 501 (c) (3) designation or de facto tax-exempt status: We will not consider awards for the following:
- Advertising
- Capital campaigns
- Fund-raising activities, including tables, tickets, dinners, walks, sporting events, etc
- Grants or scholarships to individuals
- Political causes or events
- Sacramental or theological functions of any religious organization
- We will consider grant requests from $25,000 to $50,000.
- We will not consider multiyear funding requests.
- Organizations may submit only one application per market.
- The number of grants and total dollars awarded will depend upon the quantity and quality of applications received, availability of resources, and criteria provided here.
- We do not always award grants at the full amount requested.
- Submission of an application is not a guarantee of funding.

The upload for submission of the report is provided within the online application. If you do not include the interim report, your application will be ineligible for consideration.
