Pulmonary Diseases

What to expect with Aetna Specialty Pharmacy

Aetna Specialty Pharmacy understands the special needs of patients with pulmonary disease. This disease might include primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) or pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

With both PPH and PAH, patients struggle with unusually high pressure in the pulmonary artery. This makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood through the lungs, causing the patient to suffer from shortness of breath, chest pain or other symptoms.

We provide the medication and support these patients need to help improve their quality of life.

When you order your patient's specialty medications through Aetna Specialty Pharmacy, you and your patients will receive fast delivery, expert support, and so much more. Call a nurse or pharmacist anytime

If you have questions about your patient's medications, we can help. Call anytime - day or night - to talk to a registered nurse or pharmacist.

An experienced team to help manage your patients' pulmonary health

Before your patient's therapy begins, we will:
  • Make sure that you have enrolled your patient in the Letairis™ Education and Access Program (LEAP), if your patient requires Letairis.
  • Make sure that you have enrolled your patient in the Tracleer® Access Program (TAP), if your patient requires Tracleer.
  • Answer any questions your patient may have about their oral therapy, whether they require Letairis, Tracleer or Revatio.
  • Check that your patient meets the criteria to receive their prescribed medication.
  • Handle any approvals that the prescribed therapy requires.
  • Process insurance paperwork and coordinate benefits.
  • Provide your patient with information regarding available financial assistance programs, if necessary.
  • Work with you to coordinate the start of therapy.
We incorporate the following into our pulmonary health treatment program:

Assessment - After you place your patient's first order, a patient care coordinator (PCC) will contact them to verify key information - like their age, weight, therapy, dosage, any allergies, and shipping address. The PCC will assess the patient's therapy support needs. We will determine if the patient needs more help understanding their condition or medication.

Clinical help - If you or your patients have any questions, our nurses and pharmacists are always available to assist. They can be reached toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Education - We will send your patients a welcome packet to explain our services. Depending on each patient's need, a nurse or pharmacist who specializes in pulmonary disease will provide additional education.

Pulmonary health care plan - We monitor each patient's therapy usage. We make sure they always have the right medication and dose for their needs. If your patient wants additional support, we will contact them as often as they'd like.

If your patient requires treatment with Letairis or Tracleer, our nurses will talk to them about what to expect and confirm that they are taking the proper precautions:
  • That they are not pregnant
  • That their liver function is normal
  • That their blood work is up to date
Extra service at refill time - We will call your patient one week before their refills are due to schedule their next delivery. And while we're on the phone, we'll also check how they are doing.

We'll ask your patient to confirm:
  • How they are doing with their therapy.
  • If they are still taking the same specialty drug.
  • If they are still taking the same dose.
  • If they are having any side effects.
  • Where they would like your next refill delivered.
If your patient needs help, we'll put them in touch with a nurse or pharmacist. We may also reach out to you to talk about your patient's medication or dose.

Open lines of communication -Our clinical team works closely with you and your patients. A nurse will call each patient as often as they need. If your patient expresses any concerns about their medication or dose, we will contact you to discuss.

If your patient needs extra emotional support, we can even put them in touch with an Aetna Behavioral Health specialist.

Product integrity - We take care of your patient's medications. Our pharmacists will double check each order to make sure it's right before it goes out the door. Our special packaging keeps medications at the right temperature.

Dependable delivery - We can send your patient's medications by UPS or FedEx - anywhere. That includes the patient's home, your office, or any other location. We track each shipment through our Critical Package Recovery Program. This ensures your patients receive safe, quick delivery of their medication.

Improvement plans - We constantly evaluate the success of our pulmonary health program through patient and physician satisfaction surveys.
